Terrible Hygiene and how to spot it.

With the growing number of tattoo studios in the country, how do you know who to trust with your body? Bad hygiene can be potentially life threatening, so we want you to be able to see who is doing things right by giving you insight into how things should be done right.

The Significance of Hygiene in Tattoo Studios: Hygiene is not merely a matter of cleanliness; it is a fundamental aspect of responsible tattooing. Poor hygiene practices can lead to a myriad of health risks, including bacterial infections, skin diseases, and even bloodborne pathogens. A reputable tattoo studio prioritizes the well-being of its clients by maintaining strict hygiene protocols. As a client, understanding the significance of hygiene empowers you to make informed decisions about where to get your next tattoo.

Warning Signs of Poor Hygiene: What to look for.

Unclean Workspaces: One of the first red flags is a visibly dirty or disorganized workspace. A clean and well-maintained studio is essential for preventing the spread of infections. This means clean surfaces, no clutter of mixed materials, and clean tattoo equipment.

Reused Needles and Equipment: Reusing needles and other equipment is a blatant violation of hygiene standards. Sterilization of all tools is non-negotiable for a safe tattooing experience. Most studios these days use single-use equipment that is opened, used then disposed of... be prepared to ask artists what equipment they use and explain their process to you, of you feel necessary.

Lack of Protective Measures: Proper hygiene includes the use of disposable gloves, aprons, and other protective gear. ALL equipment the artist or client will touch should be wrapped with protective materials. This means:

  • Tattoo Chair or Bed.

  • Arm rest, if used.

  • Tattoo station.

  • Tattoo machine.

  • Tattoo light, if artist is required to touch to move.

Basically ANYTHING the artist or yourself will touch during the tattoo process. If your artist tattoos you on an unwrapped bed, that's a seriously bad hygiene practice. Tattoos involve blood and you don't know whose blood has been on that bed before you sit on it. If your artist isn't taking these precautions, it's a clear sign of negligence.

Inadequate Waste Disposal: Proper disposal of used materials is crucial. If you notice hazardous waste, such as used needles, not being disposed of in designated containers, it's time to reconsider your choice of studio.

What to Look for in a Hygienic Tattoo Studio:

  1. Autoclave Sterilization: A reputable studio will use an autoclave to sterilize all non-disposable equipment, ensuring the elimination of bacteria and viruses.

  2. Single-use Items: Needles, ink cups, and other disposable items should be opened in front of you to guarantee that they are new and sterile. Be willing to ask your artist to do this. Any good artist with great hygiene practises will say 'yes'.

  3. Clean and Organized Environment: A well-maintained and organized studio reflects a commitment to hygiene. If a studio looks clean, free of clutter and all surfaces and equipment are clean, that's a great sign.

  4. Certifications and Licensing: Legitimate tattoo studios will display certifications, licenses, and health department permits prominently. Don't hesitate to ask about these credentials, they're essential for any artist to prove they understand hygiene practices.

AFTERCARE:

A great studio will also provide high quality aftercare advice to keep your tattoo clean and protected once you walk out of the studio door. I've already written a blog about aftercare, so take a look at that for good advice, but a minimum requirement should be wrapping the tattoo and giving an explanation of how to best take care of it for 1-2 weeks post tattoo.

Conclusion: Choosing a tattoo studio is a significant decision that goes beyond the aesthetics of the art itself. Hygiene is the backbone of a safe and enjoyable tattooing experience. By being aware of the warning signs of poor hygiene and understanding what to look for in a clean and responsible studio, you can make an informed choice that prioritizes your health and the longevity of your ink. Remember, a beautiful tattoo should be a positive memory, not a potential health hazard.
